India-Italy Workshop on "Machine Learning Applications in Climate and Ocean Science"

The India-Italy Workshop on "Machine Learning Applications in Climate and Ocean Science" began today (11th February 2025) at Aryabhatta Hall, IITM, Pune, in auspicious presence of the dignitaries from Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), India, Euro Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC), Italy and Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, IITM, Pune, India.
About 50 researchers/ participants from various research and academic institutions, and 10 resource persons from CMCC Italy attended the program.
During the Opening Ceremony, the welcome addresses and opening remarks were presented by Dr R. Krishnan, Director IITM and Dr. Kamaljit Ray, Scientist G & Advisor, MoES from India followed by delegates from Italy.
Prof. Antonio Navarra (President of the Foundation Euro Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC) & full time Professor at the University of Bologna) and Dr. Paola Mercogliano (Head, Research Division REMHI (Regional Model and geo-Hydrological Impacts), CMCC Foundation, Italy) were felicitated by IITM Project Directors, Dr. S.D. Pawar and Dr. Thara Prabhakaran respectively.
Following Keynote talks were delivered:
i) "Opportunities for Improving Climate and Monsoon Modelling" by Dr. R. Krishnan, IITM, India
ii) "The Role of ML in Advancing Climate Science – Part-1" by Prof. Antonio Navarra, CMCC, Italy
iii) "The Role of ML in Advancing Climate Science – Part-2" by Dr. Paola Mercogliano, CMCC, Italy
Three technical sessions were conducted on the Day#1 on the following topics:
i) Building AI Infrastructure for Climate;
ii) Climate Change Modeling and Downscaling using AI;
iii) Prediction of Extreme Events
The technical session was followed by Poster session. Twenty 27 resource persons from India and Italy have been involved in this international workshop which were attended by about 50 researchers/ participants from various research and academic institutions such as MoES institutions, IISER, Pune, SPPU, Pune, CDAC, Pune, CMCC Italy.
