The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), under the auspices of the Ministry of Earth Sciences of the Government of India, will host the 6th International Conference on Climate Services (ICCS6) in Pune, India from February 11-13, 2020. ICCS6 will develop connections between and among the range of actors that make up the climate services community, including those based at national and regional meteorological services, national and local governments, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, research institutes, and the private sector. It provides a unique opportunity to share skills, experience, and expertise with an active climate services network.
The theme of the conference is advancing the knowledge and practice of climate services for climate resilience. Conference presentations will engage issues related to the production and use of climate services in a range of social and economic sectors. ICCS is the premiere climate services event, organized jointly by the Global Framework for Climate Services, an international effort coordinated by the World Meteorological Organization, and the Climate Services Partnership (CSP), an informal platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration. Financial support is provided under the UK Department for International Development Asia Regional Resilience to a Changing Climate (ARRCC) Programme.
Climate services, which provide timely, tailored information and knowledge to decision-makers – generally in the form of tools, products, websites, or bulletins – are an important part of improving our capacity to manage climate-related risks.
India, due to its high reliance on climate-sensitive sectors such as agriculture, water, and forestry, faces an urgent need to adapt to the risks posed by climate change. The country has also made significant progress in developing and using climate services at both national and regional levels. In this context, ICCS-6 provides an ideal venue to promote dialogue on actionable solutions take place both in the region and around the world.
